Mission Statement

The Emmaus House mission is to meet the needs of women. In particular, it is to provide temporary shelter for women and their children who are in crisis which leaves them homeless or without resources. It also is to provide a safe, inviting setting in which to regroup and experience spiitual and physical renewal.

Description

Emmaus House opened in 1983 by the Society of St. Margaret. The Sisters of St. Margaret are Episcopal nuns working for the good of those less fortunate or underserved. The Shelter is located in the Cornhill area of Utica,NY. The House is a large Victorian home with 7 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. Several large meeting rooms and 2 dining rooms. We provde room and board for up to 18 adults and children at one time. The population changes almost daily. There are staff members in the house at all times. We are open 24 hrs per day and 365 days a year. Our services also provide referrials to appropriate agencies and help with housing and employment opportunities as needed. We work with 60 or more referrial agencies a year. We are also a lead safe enviornment and house many children who are displaced by lead poisioning.
