Mission Statement
Upendo means love. And love is what orphans and other vulnerable children need!
The volunteer-run centre takes an active role and cares for around 275 children in Mukuru, a slum in Nairobi's south.
Mission Upendo's major aims include: to give Mukuru's street children a competitive primary education; to prepare students to enter secondary or vocational school; to raise the rate of employment and self-imployment; to minimize juvenile delinquency and drug addiction; to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS and to disseminate information about proper sanitation, health, and nutrition.
Description
Description Upendo Rescue Center was established in 2002 with the mission of addressing the problems of the street children in the Mukuru slum of Nairobi, Kenya. The parents or guardians of many children have died or are bed-ridden.
Often this is due to HIV/AIDS or other diseases resulting from poor living conditions. At Upendo, the children have access to education, which they could not afford otherwise, as well as to positive adult role models and other resources that will help them live healthy and successful lives.
