The mission of the Corporation for National and Community Service is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagment through service and volunteering. (The Corporation oversees the FGP grant and operations). The Charleston Area Senior Services Inc sponsors the FGP locally and it's mission is "Enhancing lives of older adults in the community one life at a time."
Make a Difference in the Life of a Child
The Foster Grandparent Program offers seniors age 55 and older opportunities to serve as mentors, tutors, and loving caregivers for children and youth with special needs. If you are interested in serving as a Foster Grandparent, you must reside in the tri-county. Foster Grandparents serve 15-20 hours a week, usually 4 hours a day Monday through Friday, serving children with one-on-one, direct service. Other benefits include reimbursement for transportation, some meals during service, and accident and liability insurance while on duty. A small tax-free stipend is given to seniors who meet income eligibility guidelines to offset the cost for volunteering. Pre-Service and monthly training sessions provided in addition to fun-filled recognition events during the program year.
