Mission Statement

The Foster Grandparent Program was designed to provide opportunities for low-income people aged 60 and over to have an impact on critical community needs through their service. Foster Grandparents offer supportive, person-to-person service to children with special or exceptional needs in health, education, welfare, and related settings.

The Foster Grandparent Program focuses primarily on the mutually beneficial relationship between an older person and a child with special needs.

Description

Goals of the Foster Grandparent Program:

  1. Have an impact on critical community needs through volunteer service.
  2. Enable low income persons aged 60 and over to remain physically and mentally active and to enhance their self-esteem through continued participation in community service.
  3. Enable children with either exceptional or special needs to achieve improved physical, mental, emotional and social development, assisting them to grow up with a positive self-image and a sense of personal competence.

Over the past couple of years, I have often told my husband, there should be a volunteer organization matching active seniors with families who could benefit from supportive, extended family relationships. In many cases, such as my own, grandparents and grandchildren are estranged from each other, for many reasons, such as to follow work opportunities. I live in California, I have one daughter and 2 granddaughters in Tennessee and another daughter with 4 grandsons in Connecticut. I cannot afford to travel often, so I only get to see my grandchildren once a year or sometimes, every-other year. My husband and I are very caring, generous people. He retires May 31, 2013 and we will be moving to the San Diego area. This morning, I finally decided if there wasn't already an organization such as this, I would initiate a Grandparent Match Program upon my arrival in San Diego! I was thrilled to discover this Foster Grandparent Program and am looking forward to becoming a future volunteer.
