Description

It is a program of dedicated senior citizens that volunteer 15 hours per week in elementary schools and tutor children. They help increase the reading skills for kids in grades K-3.

This is a program for Senior Citizens to get involved in their local communities and serve as literacy tutors. The volunteers tutor children in Kindergarten through third grade in one on one or small group settings to improve the children's reading skills. Each member is assigned to a school and works with the same teacher and children every week. This program focuses on children in poverty stricken areas and diverse demographics. Through this intergenerational program, the volunteers also become role models and mentors to the children. The program is in 9 Minneapolis Public Schools and 1 Robbinsdale Public School. The Experience Corps members receive a small bi-monthly stipend. At the completion of 450 hours, AmeriCorps provides an educational award worth $1023. The member/volunteer can use this award at a community college, a tech schools or university to take classes of their choice.
