The Senior Companion Program (SCP) is one of three programs comprising the National Senior Service Corps. SCP of Kankakee and Iroquois County is sponsored locally by Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet, since 1992. The Senior Companion Program is a volunteer service initiative in which people age 60 and older provide assistance and friendship to adults who are home-bound and generally living alone. Senior Companions also provide respite care to relieve live-in caregivers for short periods of time.
The Senior Companion Program offers an opportunity to assist homebound, frail, lonely peers through regularly scheduled home visits. Volunteers earn a modest tax-free stipend and mileage reimbursement. Volunteers serve for 20 hours per week.
