Arizonans for Children provides different supports and services for kids in foster care, including our tutor/mentor program. We have over 110 youths right now waiting for a 1 on 1 volunteer to spend time with as a mentor and/or tutor. After an applicant completes all the necessary paperwork and background checks, we send the applicant profiles of the youths living in a relatively close proximity to them who fit the criteria that the applicant is looking for (age range, gender, etc.). The applicant would then select which child they would like to mentor based on the profile which contains the youth's interest, career aspiration, home setting, individual needs, etc. We ask all our volunteers to commit to 1 year of working with the youth knowing that kids in care often times get moved around from placement to placement. Each time they move, its a new school, new home, new staff, and we would like them to have at least 1 consistent person in their life who genuinely wants to support them. Ideally, we would like the mentor to visit the youth weekly, for at least 2 hours. 8 hours is a minimum # per month though, some mentors go above and beyond as scheduling allows. The best part about the program is getting the youth out of their placement for a few hours for 1 on 1 time, versus all the youths in that placement. The idea is that these youths need to get out and have fun, and at times need some coaching in developing positive skills in their life. Here's a brief look at the program with the links for the next step: Requirements * 21yrs+ * Pass a background check * Commit to 1 year working with youth in foster care * Have reliable transportation Mentor's Role * Have fun with youth @ activities * Develop social & life skills of the youth * Assist with academics Mentor Program Info Page http://arizonansforchildren.org/mentor Mentor Application http://arizonansforchildren.org/volunteer-application
