Mission Statement

The mission of Redwings Horse Sanctuary is to eliminate the causes of equine suffering through educational and community outreach programs, rescue abused, abandoned, and neglected equines and provide permanent sanctuary or selected adoptive homes for those equines.

Description

Redwings Horse Sanctuary is one of the oldest and most well-established horse rescues in San Luis Obispo County, California. Founded in 1991 and established as a 501(c)3 non-profit in 1995, we have grown from rescuing 15 horses in our first year to providing sanctuary and rehabilitation to 75-90 horses annually. Our horse numbers fluctuate based on the number of adoptions and new rescues at any given time, but our current maximum capacity based on staff, space, and resources is 90 horses. Redwings purchases a permanent home for the horses on 141 acres in Paso Robles, CA and officially moved in 2021.

We prioritize rescue and rehabilitation of the most at-risk horses in our local community and throughout California, often from county animal services. Our horses have also come various at-risk situations, including: Mustangs and Burros from Bureau of Land Management population control roundups; rescues from livestock auctions; and rescues from Premarin farms (a hormone replacement drug made from estrogen in pregnant mare urine). We also partner with another non-profit, the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA), to accept retired off-track California racehorses to rehabilitate and rehome these highly adoptable Thoroughbreds, and to promote responsible ownership. We have accepted owner-surrender horses in special circumstances on a case-by-case basis, most often when the owner is facing a serious illness.
