Mission Statement
Born out of the notion that everyone should be able to write well, and speak effectively, Detroit's Write Idea aims to fill a specific void: the chasm between what we think and our ability to communicate it in writing or aloud. The current situation poses significant problems: why is effective communication being thrown to the wayside? We don't believe kids can, or more importantly should, learn about writing backwards: starting with texts, tweets and posts all geared towards communicating the maximum amount of information in the fewest amount of characters. In the process, grammar is disregarded, proper spelling avoided and full, complete thoughts virtually nonexistent.
We think people should do better. We think the lack of a proper foundation coupled with bad habits developed over the years are causing more significant and permanent damage than can even be imagined.
Description
We put volunteers in schools and pair them with classes ranging from 3rd to 6th grade to augment their writing workshop sessions. Volunteers help the kids with thought development, composition, speeling and grammar.
