Front desk and reception volunteers are the first of many friendly faces families and visitors see when they come to our House. A front desk/reception volunteer combines altruism with detailed organizational skills. You will greet visitors, support guests with details about the House programs (such as mealtimes), give tours, answer phones, schedule activities, accept deliveries/donations, greet donors, provide and help keep our great room tidy and welcoming. You may also assist with special projects including toy/clothing distributions, building welcome bags for guests, data entry, mailings and filing, and other administrative tasks. This is a great volunteer opportunity to do with a friend. Many shifts have openings for two volunteers! With our front doors closed to daily visitors due to COVID-19 restrictions, having volunteer shifts filled at the front desk to help guests navigate new processes is more important than ever! Key Responsibilities: Provide support to the House guest services staff. This position combines guest services with administrative assistant duties. Complete administrative assignments with a focus on quality and timeliness. Demonstrate excellent service while interacting with guests, visitors, donors, staff, volunteers, etc. over the phone (answer phones, transfer calls, take accurate messages) and in person. Be the information "go to person" for donors, guests, and volunteers about the House activities and operations. Bring your cheerful and helpful approach to your assignments to create a warm, supportive environment for all who live, work, and visit the House. Qualifications: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to easily work with a diverse population. Demonstrate poise, tact, diplomacy and empathy when working with guests and visitors. Proven clerical experience answering phones, photocopying, faxing, scanning, and filing. Proficient with computer applications and databases (e.g., MS Office; Internet searches). Excellent verbal and written communication skills including vocabulary, grammar and spelling. Self-starter able to work with minimal supervision, and as an integral team member. Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple, competing tasks and requests. Enthusiastic with a willingness to learn. Able to lift up to 25 lbs (accommodations made for those who cannot lift).

Food is love and that love is in motion when you drive a Ronald McDonald House Charities(r) San Diego vehicle to rescue fresh food from local stores such as Costco, Trader Joes, Starbucks, and Whole Foods. The food you deliver back to the House will be thoughtfully prepared and served to sustain families eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner here while their children are treated and admitted to local hospitals. Your time driving and delivering the food positively impacts families to sustain their strength during their child’s healing process. Key Responsibilities: Arrive on time each scheduled day. Maintain an organized vehicle. Assist vendors in transporting food from their warehouse to our vehicle. Receive and record donations. Take photos on our tablet of all food donations. Organize rescued food upon return to the House. Help staff clean-up receiving area. Qualifications: Valid CA driver’s license and clean DMV driving record Proof of insurance Ability to move freely and able to lift 50 lbs (accommodations made for those who cannot lift). Reliable and dependable! Outgoing, helpful demeanor able to take direction and fulfill pick-ups. Demonstrate friendly, helpful attitude when working with vendors. Good organizational skills. Self-starter able to work with minimal supervision, and as an integral team member. Reports any operational problems with the vehicle immediately. All vehicles are equipped with sanitizer. All volunteers must wear mask, and social distance from others.

Are you a foodie with a philanthropic heart? Do you wish you could be on a team that delivers culinary creations to an appreciative group of diners? If you answered YES to either question, we at Ronald McDonald House Charities(r) San Diego have a volunteer opportunity for you -- let the chef in you LIVE in our NEW commercial kitchen! Bring your sous chef skills to task working with our kitchen staff to prep, cook, and serve breakfast, lunch, or dinner to families who children are staying in local hospitals due to serious illnesses and injuries. Your creations will be experienced by approximately 250 hungry people of all ages who need to be nourished during a most challenging time for them. This is a fun and productive way to spend time with family members or friends -- most shifts need two volunteers! COVID-19 has brought us challenges, but we continue to serve meals to guests staying at the House as well as visitors from Rady Children's Hospital and Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns along with other hospitals nearby. Key Responsibilities: Assist chef with meal preparation by washing and chopping food. Pre-cook food items, if necessary. Inspect food for quality. Package all foods into conveniently located containers. Serve food with a smile! Help chef clean-up work area. Qualifications: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to easily work with a diverse population. Demonstrate poise, tact, diplomacy and empathy when working with guests and visitors. Experience and interest cooking and preparing food a plus! Self-starter able to work with minimal supervision, and as an integral team member. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple, competing tasks and requests. Enthusiastic with a willingness to learn. Able to lift up to 25 lbs (accommodations made for those who cannot lift).
