Efforts will be expanded to engage partners, develop opportunities locally and state-wide, and engage youth by building communities of connections for youth in transition through engaging business, community agencies and individuals in developing social networks on a local and state-wide basis; developing workforce development opportunities for youth through partnerships with Career Centers and other employment development agencies statewide and by engaging all community partners and youth in sustainability planning and implementation.
Maine Youth Opportunities Initiative is a demonstration project focused on assisting youth in transition from foster care, ages 14 - 23, in the areas of education, employment, housing, mental/physical health, and personal and community engagement. Important partners include DHHS, service providers, financial institutions, and the business community. Key program components include financial literacy training, a matched savings program, community connections, support for employment, leadership skill development. Year 3 will focus on documenting the process of building Friends of Youth in Care commuity networks around the state and engaging community partners in developing a sustainability plan to be implemented in years 4, 5 and 6.
