Mission Statement

Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC) is dedicated to artistic excellence, accessibility, and education. We present plays of the highest artistic caliber that celebrate ideas and language to create dialogue around compelling issues of our time. We eliminate barriers - physical, economic, and cultural - to bring live theater to audiences throughout Greater Boston. We cultivate in young artists the value of community engagement, and collaborate with educators to bring literature to life in the classroom.

Description

Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC), best known for its annual free performances on the Boston Common, is a non-profit organization founded in 1996, dedicated to the core values of artistic excellence, accessibility, and education. CSC’s Free Shakespeare on the Common has served over one million audience members over its 23-year history, and has become a beloved summer tradition enjoyed by nearly 75,000 people annually.

In 2013, CSC became the Theatre-in-Residence at Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. In addition to the annual Boston Common production, CSC presents several plays and staged readings at both the Sorenson Center for the Arts at Babson and at various venues throughout Boston, including Theatre in the Rough, Shakespeare & the Law, and Shakespeare & Leadership. CSC fulfills its educational mission with actor-training programs for pre-professional and professional actors through the summer Apprentice program and CSC2.
