Mission Statement

The California Preservation Foundation is the statewide nonprofit organization that educates and advocates for the preservation of California's diverse cultural and architectural heritage.


The California Preservation Foundation, founded in 1976, is California's only statewide non-profit historic preservation education, advocacy and membership organization.

A 21-member Board of Trustees, comprised of individuals throughout the state with professional or avocational expertise related to historic preservation, governs the California Preservation Foundation.
The board strives to govern the Foundation in accordance with best practices, as set forth by national organizations that focus on furthering effective and ethical philanthropy.

The Foundation's staff includes a full-time Executive Director, a Field Services Director, and a Development Director.

The Foundation's staffing is enhanced by the efforts of approximately 250 individuals who assist the organization in a variety of capacities. In addition to service on the board of trustees, volunteer opportunities include service on a range of committees:
· Easements
· Legislation and Advocacy
· Education
Workshops and Online Continuing Education
Study Tours
· Annual Conference
· Membership
· Development

Individuals also volunteer their time by providing pro bono professional services.

The Foundation has approximately 1000 members, including many organizations, throughout the state.

The Foundation:
-Sponsors the annual California Preservation Conference, which will celebrate the 41st annual conference at the San Francisco Presidio, April 17 - 20, 2016 anticipating over 500 participants;

-Recognizes the best in historic preservation projects through its annual Preservation Design Awards. The 36th annual event will be held September 2016, in Los Angeles. CPF also recognizes individual and organizational achievements in preservation through its annual President's Awards program held at the Annual Conference;

-Trains approximately 500+ people each year at educational workshops and training sessions on important preservation issues;

-Publishes a quarterly newsletter, California Preservation, and special publications on a variety of topics important to preservation in California;

-Supports preservation efforts through advocacy and legal action throughout the state; and,

-Assists hundreds of Californians each year with their preservation questions and problems via on-site, e-mail or telephone assistance.
