Mission Statement

The Early Literacy Program is a non-profit dedicated to promoting reading to children every day to build language and learning skills for life.

Description

The Early Literacy Program works to expand early language development programs. Our vision is that all children will be read to everyday. Reading to children everyday will allow them the opportunity to establish a foundation for learning.
Our goal is to impact the lives of children in Orange County, California, especially those in low-income communities by:

1. Providing parents with information on how to read to children and why reading is important.

2. Putting books into children's hands to increase the number of books present in the child's home.

3. Providing Early Literacy Readers and Volunteers to read to children in the waiting rooms at medical sites where the pediatricians take part in the Reach Out & Program, and at community events .

4. Promote the expansion of successful literacy program models, including Reach Out & Read, HABLA, (Home-based Activities Building Language Acquisition), and Family Literacy Programs.

ELP's Reach Out and Read program is the best volunteer program I have ever been involved with. It is very professionally run and volunteers are mentored by wonderful, experienced readers. You really feel like you are making a difference providing information and modeling reading to parents who often are unaware of the importance of reading to their very young children. We have monthly meetings led by reading expert Dr. Clinard that are full of information and support. Check it out - there are other opportunities as well. I can't say enough good things about this program.
