Mission Statement

The vision of the American Bookbinders Museum is to provide a complete experience of bookbinding history, craft and culture. We are a comprehensive library and archive focused on the history of the bookbinding trade and the people who are central to this early American industry. Our museum features exhibits related to all aspects of book creation and includes a fully functional nineteenth century style bookbindery. The American Bookbinders Museum aims to collect and preserve important artifacts of this tradition and share their significance with today's modern world.

Description

The American Bookbinders Museum is proud to be the only bookbinding-specific museum in the United States, hosting an important collection of equipment and research materials related to the history of bookbinding in America. The museum offers visitors an interactive experience related to daily operations within a 19th century bookbindery; the museum library and archive offer researchers a world-class collection of bookbinding history and print related resources.

The ABM is focused on sharing stories of the workers who create and bind books; this includes groups as varied as unions, engineers, designers, type-founders and papermakers. While the museum's bindery equipment and bound volumes are part of a larger story, the ABM also focuses on the craftspeople who are at the heart of this tradition.
