Mission Statement

To build a unified and powerful statewide organization that empowers and educates tenants, preserves affordable housing and livable neighborhoods, and strengthens tenant protections.

Description

Tenants & Neighbors is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization that conducts outreach, educates, and advocates throughout New York State and primarily the five boroughs of New York City, to strengthen poor and working communities by protecting tenants'rights and affordable neighborhoods from the effects of a severe, long-lasting housing shortage. We were founded in 1993 by members of the New York State Tenants & Neighbors Coalition, an advocacy and organizing group founded in 1974. A major focus of our work for eleven years has been assisting tenants in federally subsidized apartment buildings when their subsidy contracts expire. Our experience shows that tenant and community engagement is the key to preserving both affordability and good building conditions. But the complexity of federal housing programs means that tenants need technical assistance to be effective. We are the only group in New York State that takes complicated federal policy issues and makes them understandable to tenants who are seeking to preserve their homes.
