Mission Statement

The mission of the Bolsa Chica Land Trust is to acquire, restore and preserve ALL of the mesa, lowlands, and wetlands of the Bolsa Chica, and to educate the public about this natural treasure.

Description

Volunteer opportunities at the Bolsa Chica Land Trust are categorized into Restoration and Education. Join the Bolsa Chica Stewards, the Restoration Team of the Bolsa Chica Land Trust to restore the Bolsa Chica into healthy native habitat by growing and planting native plants, weeding invasive plants, and trash clean ups. The Miracles of the Marsh educational program and tour docents educate thousands of school children and the public to the ecology, history, and importance of the Bolsa Chica wetlands.

The Bolsa Chica Land Trust was formed in 1992 by a small group of Californians who believed that one of the last standing wetlands ecosystems in Southern California was worth preserving for future generations. The Land Trust now includes more than 5000 members from throughout California and twenty other states.

The Land Trust aspires to increase awareness about the role of Bolsa Chica wetlands ecosystem in the natural and urban environment and tell the story of its rich history.

Part of the preservation goal was achieved with the sale of 880 acres of wetlands to the State Lands Commission in 1997. Another part was achieved in 2005 with the state's purchase of the lower bench of the Bolsa Chica mesa, 118 acres.

However, there is still valuable upland habitat that could be lost to development, called Ridge and Goodell, which the Land Trust is actively trying to save.

This organization is super organized and very charitable. Helping at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands is always a joy since one has the immediate satisfaction of helping the environment and frequent volunteers will observe the plant growth as well. Whenever I've volunteered here snacks were provided so that's a plus as well.
