Our mission is to motivate and mobilize communities to take a proactive approach to reducing homicides and the senseless violence occurring in our cities.
ROOT, Inc., a Washington, D.C. nonprofit, 501(c) 3 organization, is committed to advocacy and intervention on behalf of victims of gun violence and their families.
ROOT is an acronym, which stands for Reaching Out to Others Together. It was founded in 2002 after the horrific murder of Kenny Barnes, Jr., the son of the founder /CEO of ROOT, Inc., Kenny Barnes, Sr., M.S. His son was killed by a young man who was a product of the Juvenile Justice System in the District of Columbia. ROOT also stands for: "we need to get to the root of the problem; what is creating such violent young children today?"
ROOT, Inc. believes, as the Centers for Disease Control does, that gun and youth violence is a public health issue, and that violence is a symptom of the problem - not the problem. ROOT Inc. has identified a three prong approach to preventing and reducing gun violence and youth violence which include:
Although youth violence has declined significantly in recent years, much work remains to reduce this public health burden. Homicide is the second leading cause of death among 15- to 24-year-olds overall. In this age group, homicide is the number one cause of death among African Americans, the second leading cause of death among Hispanic Americans, and the third leading cause of death among American Indians.
ROOT, Reaching Out to Others Together, Inc. seeks to be a nationally recognized institution with expertise in addressing the ROOT causes of the systemic apathy that fosters a culture of violence in our communities today and to implement multimodal solutions that ensure individuals, families and communities stop enduring the tragedy of homicides by gun violence.
