Mission Statement

Shadhika is a non-profit U.S. foundation. Our mission is to assist needy women, children, and their families in India to acquire shelter, education, health care and employment. Shadhika does this by funding grants for specific projects from select social service agencies in India. The Foundation focuses on projects that enable people to help themselves and often works with smaller, 'grass-roots' efforts that have passionate leadership, low overhead and consistent quality. Shadhika makes every effort, including site visits, to ensure that the grants are spent appropriately.

Description

Shadhika was started in 1990 by Juthica Stangl, a native of Calcutta, currently a resident of California, and was formally incorporated in 1992. Its original purpose was to facilitate the release of women from Calcutta prison's "non-criminal insane" block, and to finance the establishment of a facility where they could start their rehabilitation. This resulted in Paripurnata halfway house. Since then the law has changed and incarceration of non-criminal women is no longer legal. Paripurnata now receives and rehabilitates patients discharged from mental hospitals. By 2005 Paripurnata has helped over 90 women re-enter life with life skills and confidence. Shadhika has also grown to cover additional projects for women and children.
