Mission Statement
Founded in 1983 by the Western North Carolina Conference of United Methodist Church, UMAR is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting community inclusion, independence and growth for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through residential, vocational and cultural enrichment opportunities.
Description
UMAR is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and an agency and ministry of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. Our 24 group homes, 9 apartments, and 3 day programs allowing individuals to experience independent living in a home-like atmosphere. UMAR provides a continuum of services to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities with varying levels of intensity based on needs and preferences.
We utilize CAP, government and private funds to provide the following:
Residential Support - Group Living, Supervised Apartments, AFL and Independent Living arrangements.
Community-based Services - Residential Support, Home and Community, In-home Skill Building, Community Networking and Respite
Vocational Services - Vocational Rehabilitation, Supported Employment and Long-term Support.
Day Support - Unique Art Programs that foster independence and creativity through Visual, Performing, Horticulture, Culinary and Cultural Arts with educational programs driven by personal choice.
Today, UMAR serves over 400 individuals of all genders, races, ethnic origins, cultures and faiths in the following areas:
