Mission Statement

We believe that this volunteer operated program will provide a regular and essential link between incarcerated parents and their families, providing an opportunity for healthy and carefully monitored contact, and thus mitigating many of the negative consequences that result from the disconnection.

Description

Motivated, qualified inmates with a minor child will read and record books onto cassette tapes, which will then be forwarded to the children. A book committee comprised of Department of Corrections (DOC) staff will select and order books that inmates can choose from according to preferred language, age and interests of the child, personal preference, etc. Books Beyond will create a much needed tie between parent and child. With the help and supervision of volunteers, inmates will be able to provide much needed messages of love, reassurance and connection to their estranged children. The children will have a constant reminder of their mothers and fathers, a tape that may be replayed over and over again until the next one arrives.
