Mission Statement

A Maker Faire is about learning, doing and making. It’s not about the finished product. It’s a place to share and show off what we are learning. It’s a place to celebrate the fun and freedom of being an amateur.

Description

The second annual SLO Mini Maker Faire is coming back to San Luis Obispo and we’re looking for volunteers! Come and support this incredible community extravaganza. We have a number of shifts available the day of the faire-- Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Mission Plaza in downtown San Luis Obispo starting at 7am till 5pm. Learn more about volunteer opportunities and sign-up here.

The SLO Mini Maker Faire is a festival that is open to all ages (babies to 100+!) to MAKE, create, learn, invent, craft, recycle, build, think, play, and be inspired by celebrating arts, crafts, engineering, food, music, science, and technology. SLO Mini Maker Faire takes after its enormous parent event, Maker Faire, but will be a smaller, community-focused event, celebrating do-it-yourself creativity and tinkering. The event is free and open to the public.

More than 40 Makers have been chosen for SLO Mini Maker Faire 2014, including several Young Makers from local middle and high schools. This year’s Faire will feature an event from the Cal Poly Science Caf, as well as Maker booths featuring demonstrations and hands-on activities such as exhibits on robotics, DIY (do-it-yourself) science and technology, kinetic sculpture, 3D laser scanning, unique textile arts & crafts, unusual tools and machines, green tech, sustainability, upcycling, alternative energy, DIY skateboards, educational workshops and installations, and much more!

The SLO Mini Maker Faire 2014 is sponsored by the City of San Luis Obispo, PG&E, Clever Ducks, Pacific Energy, and the following organizations at Cal Poly: the Center for Excellence in STEM Education, the Center for Expressive Technologies, the College of Liberal Arts, and the College of Engineering and is co-produced by MAKE Magazine; San Luis Obispo Museum of Art; Central Coast MakerSpace at Los Osos Middle School; CCSTEM; iFixit; SLO MakerSpace; Sm(ART) Studio; Mentors from Atascadero Greybots Robotics Team; Faculty from Cuesta College Fine Arts; Cal Poly Departments of CESAME, Center for Expressive Technologies, and the Science Caf; Cal Poly Faculty and Staff from the Kennedy Library, Liberal Arts & Engineering Studies, Architecture, Computer Science, Ethnic Studies, Materials Engineering, Physics, Political Science, and Women’s & Gender Studies.
