The 2018 hurricane season has been extraordinarily active in parts of the U.S., with Hurricane Florence currently impacting millions in the Carolinas. As this natural disaster unfolds, the staff here at VolunteerMatch is doing its part to ensure that, if you are in an affected community, you are prepared and safe. And if you are looking to help with disaster relief efforts, you know about the most effective ways to contribute.
We help teens and young adults impacted by cancer live their very best lives by providing a comprehensive continuum of essential resources and advocating for improved service delivery.
Teens Living with Cancer (TLC) is the peer support program of Melissa's Living Legacy Teen Cancer Foundation. At TLC, teens and young adults with cancer have the opportunity to form a new peer community of friends who understand what it's like to have cancer. Through weekly activities at our Teen Center, teens and young adults learn important coping strategies while having fun. At TLC, there is no such thing as a bad hair day and everyone is welcome. At TLC, teens get to be "normal" teens during a time when everything has become abnormal. Because we provide a continuum of support, teens and young adults benefit from our programs and resources throughout their entire cancer experience - from diagnosis through treatment and into healthy survivorship, or if necessary, end of life. At the same time that our teens benefit from peer support, our parents and caregivers find the same support through the TLC Parent's Circle. Currently, we have chapters of TLC in Rochester and Buffalo, NY and an active on-line community through our website: www.teenslivingwithcancer.org.
