Mission Statement

WEdia is a non-profit media company committed to giving a voice to the world's poor and marginalized populations. We match professional media volunteers with relief organizations and other NGOs to document ignored, forgotten and under-reported stories. Broadcast quality video is delivered, free of charge, to both mainstream and emerging media outlets, increasing relief and mobilizing the public to advocate for policy change. With WEdia's support, NGOs and journalists work together to bring humanitarian issues out of the shadows.

Since 2005, WEdia has sent professional media volunteers to Mali, Niger, Pakistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo to document our partners' humanitarian aid efforts. WEdia footage has aired on CNN, BBC, CBS, ABC, NBC, and FOX, as well as being distributed by the AP and Reuters newswires.

Description

Humanitarian crises are invisible to Western audiences without mainstream media coverage. Humanitarian aid and relief organizations (NGOs) handling these crises rely heavily on monetary donations to fund relief efforts. While media coverage undoubtedly increases donations and public awareness, ratings-driven media outlets frequently lack the resources and motivation to cover these stories. WEdia acts as an independent source of funding and support to both journalists and NGOs to increase media coverage and, therefore, funding and awareness of humanitarian issues.

WEdia removes the barriers preventing humanitarian issues from capturing the media spotlight. By removing the cost factor for both the media and NGOs, WEdia not only facilitates a positive trend in reporting, decreasing the conflation of news and entertainment, or "infotainment", but also brings increased relief to those in need. With WEdia's support NGOs and journalists work together to bring humanitarian issues out of the shadows.
