Mission Statement

Northern Illinois University's Communiversity Gardens Program is focused on building a unified community through gardening education about and the cultivation of organically sustainable food products. We strive to create environmental awareness and change both on campus and within our extended community.

Description

The Communiversity Gardens Program is taking a huge step towards engaging students, faculty, and the surrounding community in building unifying relationships through education and cultivation of sustainable food production.

  • A center for engaged community service ; departments and faculty can direct service-oriented individuals to participate in the maintenance, planning, and participation with the garden; a concerted effort for coordinating volunteers interested in either research or volunteerism could cement the gardens as a major role on campus for student and community engagement.
  • Donating to the students and community; the creation of an initiative to inspire greater nutritional health for the NIU population; in addition, a program to direct garden products to local food pantries.
  • General and multidisciplinary research; on urban community gardens as a whole; biological sciences research, nutrition research, community leadership and civic engagement research, undergraduate program research, and more.
