Mission Statement
Ravenswood English seeks to address the issue of linguistic segregation that occurs in urban elementary schools by providing English language learners much needed access to the English language. Ravenswood English pairs ordinary speakers of English with young English language learners to help support their English language development.
Description
Ravenswood English, associated with Stanford School of Education, focuses on developing the abilities of volunteers to provide access to English to English language learners (ELL's) enrolled in kindergarten through in schools in which there are few opportunities for these children to interact frequently on a one-to-one basis with fluent English speakers. The project has as its primary purpose developing a model volunteer-preparation program that will enable adult volunteers to assist elementary school students in developing both receptive and productive oral English language proficiencies in "linguistically isolated" schools largely populated by other monolingual Spanish-speaking students. English buddies use books and games to support English language learners with their English language. Ravenswood English also provides ongoing training and support to volunteers. The program runs at Belle Haven Community School on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays afternoons.
