Description
The Council on Adolescents is the lead agency in teen education and prevention programs in Catawba County.
Healthy Youth Education Program- The COA provides Healthy Youth Education to more than 6,000 youth across Catawba County. In-school programs follow North Carolina’s Healthy Youth Act requirements and Healthful Living Guidelines. Reproductive Health and safety education to 7th-9th graders & puberty education to 5th-6th graders.
Lunch Buddy Mentoring Program- The Lunch Buddy Program is a mentoring program designed to help reach students who are identified as being at-risk and meet the criteria of potentially dropping out of school. Mentors spend one lunch period each week during an entire school year with their mentee to accomplish this goal.
Teen Talk- This program is based in the community and is aimed at preventing risky behaviors that lead to teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, while encouraging youth to make healthy choices. Serves 100 youth each school year.
Smart Moms & Dads- NCDHHS program which serves 15-20 pregnant and parenting students in Catawba County. This program utilizes the Parents as Teachers Curriculum. The goal of this program is to help young mothers and fathers graduate high school and prevent subsequent pregnancies.
