Mission Statement

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities*, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Description

Special Olympics Onslow County hosts two local games each year: Fall which is basketball skills and Spring which is our Track & Field event and also includes Play Activities for ages 5, 6, and 7.

In addition to these events we track for the following sports: athletics, aquatics, basketball, bocce, bowling, cycling, soccer skills (hopefully this year a team) and we would like to add volleyball and softball if we can find coaches.

We also host the state qualifiers for bocce and golf; and a basketball series each year.

We hold steering committee meetings the first Thursday of the month beginning at 6:30pm at Onslow Memorial Hospital and are always looking for members and volunteers.
