Mission Statement

UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only public comprehensive cancer center for the State and the people of North Carolina. Ranked among the top nationally recognized cancer centers, its mission is to reduce cancer occurrence and death in North Carolina and the nation through research, treatment, training and outreach.

One of only 39 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, UNC Lineberger has recruited and brought together a world-renown faculty. Center faculty treat cancer patients, conduct research into the causes of cancer, develop and direct statewide programs in cancer prevention and train future physicians, nurses, scientists, and public health professionals.

UNC physicians treat cancer patients from every county in North Carolina with the highest quality and most compassionate care. The Center provides "multidisciplinary" programs for most cancers, giving patients the benefit of many medical specialists in one place, often in one visit. In addition, UNC applies the latest technology to cancer diagnosis and treatment, from Intensity Modulated Radiation therapy (IMRT) to a soon-to-be acquired CyberKnife (a large robotic arm).

Description

Throughout the course of the year, UNC Lineberger hosts several fundraisers (the Beach Ball, Tickled Pink, and the Roy Williams Fast Break for Cancer) for which volunteers are needed. Money raised through these events supports various cancer treatment, research and prevention programs.

The Beach Ball, held in April, transforms University Mall into an expanse of beach, complete with food and drinks on the "Boardwalk," live music, an auction and raffle, and more.

Tickled Pink events take place in October and consist of several luncheons held in area restaurants to raise money for women's cancers.

The Roy Williams Fast Break for Cancer raises money for cancer research in the community and is held in the Smith Center. In addition to a seated breakfast, the event includes an auction and guest speakers.
