Mission Statement

The DeSoto Literacy Council is to act as a unifying force and source of information about literacy in DeSoto County. It also provides competent and confidential tutoring in small groups or one-to-one to children and adults.


The DeSoto Literacy Council is a non-profit agency founded in 1981. It became a United Way Member Agency in 1991. It has a full time director and to VISTA workers and two Americorps members. It is affiliated with Northwest Mississippi Community College and the North Mississippi Literacy Alliance.

Everyone should have the opportunity to know how to read. The person, educational and financial benefits are immeasurable. I personally would like to do what I could to assist others to master the skill of reading.
