Mission Statement

AmeriCorps is a national service program that engages Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to local communities. The Santa Barbara County Education Office operates a local chapter of Americorps in Santa Barbara county. We seek to improve educational outcomes for students through literacy tutoring and volunteer recruitment in schools.

Description

AmeriCorps Literacy Tutors work directly with students in a classroom environment, improving literacy and providing critical student support.

AmeriCorps Volunteer Managers engage volunteers in activities that enrich student learning and improve career readiness. They work in an office environment, gaining skills in the areas of education, business and nonprofit work.

AmeriCorps members serve for one school year. Applications are being accepted now for full- and part-time positions throughout Santa Barbara County. All commitments start with extensive training in mid-August 2015 and proceed till the end of the school year, 2016. Service commitments will range from 5 to 9 hours a day depending on school needs. Monthly cash stipends will be commensurate with the service commitment and range from $800 and $1400 per month.

Upon successful completion of the term of service, members are eligible for an Education Award ranging from $2,865 to $5,730. The Education Award can be applied to future costs of school attendance or student loan payments. Healthcare coverage and childcare are available to qualified full-time members. Student loan forbearance is probable dependent on lender approval.
