Mission Statement

The Science of Learning and Educational Technology (SoLET) lab is a research laboratory housed in the Learning Sciences Institute at Arizona State University directed by Dr. Danielle S. McNamara. Research conducted in the SoLET lab addresses questions regarding theoretical explanations of cognitive processes such as text comprehension, writing, and knowledge acquisition. This lab focuses on applying research from computer science, education, and psychology into educational environments. The primary goals of the SoLET lab are to further our understanding of cognitive processes and to use this theoretical foundation to improve educational methods. Projects include: iSTART, iSTART-ME, Writing Pal, and Coh-Metrix.

Description

Arizona State University's Learning Science Institute is testing two programs aimed at developing comprehension and writing skills in high school students. Our educational methods are based on decades of research in writing, psychology, linguistics, and computer science.
