Mission Statement

We are a diverse, Title 1 public school that serves a large section of the Berkeley community. Our committed parent community and staff at Cragmont have worked hard to ensure that our students receive a complete education; not only the basic required curriculum, but one that includes art, music, gardening and nutrition, field trips, and recreation. We strive to create an atmosphere of mutual respect among all our students and are proud of our diverse student population, which is approximately 28% white, 27% African American, 22% Hispanic, 17% multi-racial, and 6% Asian.

Description

The beautiful "new" Cragmont facility opened in 1999 with 20+ computer/video ready classrooms, a 13,000 book library and large multipurpose room/cafeteria. Our outside space has a courtyard, large garden area, basket ball court, playground and grass area, separate kindergarten play area, and an inspiring and enviable view of the whole Bay Area.

Our 400+ students are split into 19 classes. Our school has a very diverse population: 28% white, 27% African American, 22% Hispanic, 17% multi-racial, 6% Asian.

Half of all the Cragmont students are enrolled in the afterschool program (200+ students).

English Language Learners comprise over 20% of our student population, most are native Spanish speakers.

Approximately 40% of our student population comes from low-income families that qualify for reduced or free-lunch. Of that 40% group, 70% are African American.

Our support staff is comprised of (approximately) 65% African American, 10% white, 25% multi-racial.

Our teaching staff is (approximately) 68% white, 16% African American, 8% Hispanic, 8% Asian.

Cragmont staff average 14 years of experience and all our teachers have CLAD credentials.

One quarter of the students are enrolled in the Two-way Spanish/English immersion program which runs K-5, with a goal of bilingualism and biliteracy by the end of 5th grade.

In addition to our wonderful classroom teachers, Cragmont has a full-time dedicated art teacher, a dedicated dance/movement teacher, upper grades science teacher, and a plant science/animal instructor for the younger students.

In 2006, Cragmont school received an 808 API score. Cragmont is in the 2nd year of the Year 3 Program Improvement (PI) School under the No Child Left Behind program, which means we met goals last year. (The program requires 2 years in a row to get out of PI status.)

Cragmont is a schoolwide Title 1 school.
