Mission Statement

  • To raise money, food and in-kind contributions for meeting the emergency food needs of the greater Lansing area;
  • To coordinate and support the work of the food pantries in the area;
  • To promote, encourage and emphasize self-help programs toward the goal of self-sufficiency;
  • To educate the community on hunger issues.

The Garden Project is a program of the Greater Lansing Food Bank dedicated to growing healthy food and cultivating community connections. The Garden Project provides gardining opportunities so that community members can grow, harvest, and preserve their own vegetables and fruits. Through the cultivation of fresh food, The Garden Project aspires to create community connections as families and neighbors garden together, fostering a sense of pride in well-tended gardens that serve as community gathering spaces.

I've been volunteering with the Garden Project at their Resource Center since the summer of 2012 and will continue to do so because I enjoy the friends I've made by volunteering, knowing I'm making a difference in people's lives, helping people to eat healthier and have enough food to eat. This is an excellent program that gives lower income people the tools and resources they need to grow their own healthy food. The program needs lots of volunteers to help staff the Resource Center from April to July and also needs volunteers to sort seeds during the winter months among other projects.
