Mission Statement

Safe Passage is commited to providing quality services and advocacy with a multi-team approach to victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual trauma and child abuse in our service area.

Description

Safe Passage, Inc. operates an emergency shelter for abused women and their children who need a safe, temporary place to go. The maximum stay is 30 days; extensions may be granted based on individual circumstances. The shelter staff monitors entrances and exits. The shelter is staffed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Abuse can fall into the following categories: physical, verbal, sexual, financial, emotional, and destruction of property and/or pets.

Safe Passage, Inc. was established for the purpose of offering protection to families living in violence so that they can attempt constructive changes in their lives and eliminate violence. Families and individuals who request shelter services do so for various reasons. For some, it provides time to access their situations and to encourage their abuser to seek help. For others, it provides safety while plans are made to locate their own living quarters and finances. It can also provide safety until arrangements can be made for a victim to relocate to another area.

The shelter staff and volunteers are trained to understand the complex problems of abuse and the specialized services that are necessary to meet the needs of the shelter residents. Their goal is to help each individual gain insight into their own feelings, understand their own helplessness, gain self-confidence in their ability to adequately deal with their problems, and begin to function as more responsible adults. The shelter provides the opportunity for battered women to express their emotional needs and to make realistic decisions (their reality, not yours) concerning their lives in a nonjudgmental environment.

During their shelter stay, domestic violence victims receive both individual and group counseling and support. Life skill topics are presented during group sessions so that residents might develop their skills and gain more realistic control of their lives. The program is preventative and educational in nature in that it assists residents in the recognition of the cycle of abuse and clarifies the steps to take to prevent it from happening in their family and in further generations. In addition, a children's program provides assessment, prevention, and treatment services for the children at the shelter and nonresidential children using both the individual and group format. The program components are geared to match the needs of each child and specifically address the issue of family violence and how this issue relates to their personal well-being.

Safe Passage, Inc. provides supportive services to non-residential clients. All services that are available to residents are also available to non-residents. All services to residential and non-residential clients are free. There is no charge for any services that are offered at Safe Passage, Inc. Safe Passage, Inc. serves three counties: York, Lancaster, and Chester. We have advocates that have offices in these counties that offer assistance to non-residential clients. Safe Passage, Inc. also offers supportive services from other counties, shelters, and out of state.
