Mission Statement

The Mission of Arcata House is to provide a program of assistance to support families and individuals building a more stable life, to educate the community about housing issues and advocate on behalf of homeless people.

Description

Arcata House was established in 1991 by the City of Arcata and a group of local churches and concerned citizens who realized that homelessness was everyone's responsibility. Starting with one house, which was destroyed by a flood soon after it opened, the program expanded to three houses by 2004.

The staff recognized that many of the people in the transitional housing program could not succeed on their own without support once they left the program. This led to the creation of Apartments First!, a permanent supportive housing program for people who are chronically homeless and disabled.

Arcata House has taken a leadership role in many community based activities that advocate for people who are homeless and educate the community. This includes a founding role in the Humboldt Housing and Homeless Coalition (HHHC), participation and leadership on the City of Arcata's Homeless Services Plan Task Force and providing consultation to the city on the new Arcata Bay Crossing Project.
