Developing Communities, Inc.

Description

DC Inc was founded by six volunteers that were dedicated to the development of small communities in Central America. The organization is the result of their combined desire to improve the quality of life for Nicaraguans. They came together as volunteers in 2001 around the building of a library and learning center and in 2003 DC Inc obtained its 501c3 status. Our long-term goal is to implement sustainable development projects in collaboration with local partnerships. Our unique approach allows development projects to be determined by local community members, which in turn ensures that the project is both, relevant to the community's needs as well inclusive of community participants at every stage of the project cycle. One illustration of our programs was the creation of a library, in which the community actively collaborated both through donating their labor hours and local land for the construction of the building. A local grass-roots board of directors makes decisions and consults about the needs and future of the library and learning center.
