VOLUNTEER ACCOUNTANT JOB DESCRIPTION Reports to: Executive Director Hours: Part-Time (Up to 5 hours per month) Volunteer Summary: The Accountant will be responsible for a variety of financial tasks, including monthly reporting, payroll management, tax filings, and other accounting activities. This role will require attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work with various team members within the organization. The Accountant is a volunteer position without pay. Benefits include a flexible schedule and 100% remote. Duties and Responsibilities: Accounting Document employee work hours. Process payroll using Quickbooks Online. Handle payroll management and tax payments. Generate financial reports and perform bank reconciliation. Record journal entries and manage the chart of accounts. Prepare and send financial statements. Handle state and federal payroll tax deposits. Prepare W2's and tax filings. Assist with annual report and 990 form preparation. Additional Responsibilities Collaborate with the Executive Director and Treasurer as needed to support financial processes. Stay updated on changes in accounting and tax regulations. Maintain the accuracy and integrity of financial data. Working Conditions Work independently - maintain a home office with computer and Internet access and place to store tutor/student materials. Flexible working hours. 100% remote environment. Must sign confidentiality agreement and maintain confidentiality of pertinent organizational information. Qualifications Proven experience in accounting and financial reporting. Proficiency in Quickbooks Online, Microsoft Excel, and Google Suite. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Knowledge of payroll processing and tax regulations. Desired Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation. READ Ottawa is looking for passionate individuals located in Holland or Zeeland to join our board as we expand into the area! Some of the areas of expertise we are looking for (but not required) are those who have experience with communications, law, human resources, finance, diversity, education, literacy, and nonprofit organizations. READ Ottawa Board Member Job Description Nonprofit board members are responsible for: providing governance to the organization with which they serve, ensuring that it meets legal requirements and that it is operating in accordance with its mission and for the purpose for which it was granted tax-exemption status; representing the organization in the community; and approving major policies. In addition to these traditional board roles, READ Ottawa Board Member responsibilities include: Attend monthly board meetings. These meetings are currently held on the third Wednesday of each month from 6:00pm - 7:30 pm (there are no board meetings in July and December). Meetings are typically virtual, but some in-person meetings. Serve as an active member on at least one board committee. The committees are Fundraising/Development, Marketing/Outreach, Programming/Operations Participate and attend fundraising events to ensure the organization has the financial resources it needs. This may include serving as an advocate with a foundation, corporation or grant giving organization; participating in the planning of fundraising events; assisting with the annual fund campaign; and making a personal contribution. Board members must assist with the annual Scrabble Fundraiser. Tutor or attend a tutor training session and tutor roundtables. Help determine the organization’s mission statement. It is the board’s responsibility to embrace and review the statement of mission and purpose that articulates the organization’s goals, means and primary clients served. Select the executive director. The board must reach consensus on the executive director’s responsibilities and, when needed, undertake a careful search to find the most qualified individual for the position. Provide proper financial oversight. The board must assist in developing the annual budget and ensuring that proper financial controls are in place. Provide needed assistance to the executive director on any and all fundraising opportunities and grants for the organization. Ensure adequate resources. One of the board’s foremost responsibilities is to provide adequate educational materials and support for the organization to fulfill its mission. Ensure legal and ethical integrity and maintain accountability. The board is ultimately responsible for ensuring adherence to legal standards and ethical norms. Ensure effective organizational planning. The board must actively participate in an overall planning process and assist in implementing and monitoring the plan’s goals. Recruit and orient new board members and assess board performance. All board members have a responsibility to evaluate prerequisites for board candidates, orient new board members, and periodically and comprehensively evaluate its own performance. Enhance the organization’s public standing. The board should clearly articulate the organization’s mission, accomplishments, and goals to the public and garner support from the community. Support the executive director and assess his or her performance. The board should ensure that the executive director has the moral and professional support he or she needs to further the goals of the organization.
