Online Volunteer Postings The Literacy Council of Sarasota welcomes, values, and relies on the contributions of volunteers at all levels of our organization. Our dedicated and compassionate volunteers work with the support of paid staff to raise awareness of the importance of adult literacy, offer hands-on teaching through one-on-one and small group instruction and support to adults, and offer multiple options focused on adult learner needs and life demands. Our volunteers work to improve English literacy in our community and open doors to greater employment, and opportunities for upward mobility in your community. Volunteers Needed: English as a second language (ESL) Volunteer Tutor Volunteer Opportunity: Tutor educated, resilient, self-directed, and motivated adults in person, one-on-one, so they learn English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills to navigate life and thrive in the United States. Training: The Literacy Council of Sarasota provides in-person tutor training over (4) 4-1/2-hour workshops, providing you with all the information and resources you need to be a dynamite tutor! Bring with You: Fluency in English and the desire to change lives in a meaningful way. No Worries! No second language skills or previous teaching or tutoring skills are needed. Time Commitment: Minimum two (2) hours per week plus lesson preparation time. Ideal for: Individuals who enjoy learning about new cultures, looking to make a genuine difference in their community, people with flexible or demanding schedules, working from home, college students, or recently retired. Volunteers Needed: Career Pathways Program Volunteer Navigator (in-person) Volunteer Opportunity: Work with our educated, resilient, self-directed, and motivated, adults by helping them to set and achieve realistic education and career goals to facilitate their economic and personal growth. Training: In-person training for this volunteer opportunity is provided. Qualities: Passion to help adult education & language learners achieve their educational and career goals and become thriving, contributing members of our community. Strong verbal communication skills Resourcefulness Motivator, supporter, and cheerleader Time Commitment: Between 2 to 4 hours per week for a minimum of 4 months. May work with up to 2 adult learners at a time depending on their individual needs. Other: Ideal volunteer opportunity for individuals who are looking to make a positive impact on adult learners in our community. Volunteer Needed: To support the tutor training process for the Literacy Council of Sarasota by: Preparing materials, (copying collating, assembling binders), Creating certificates, and training forms needed Training: Training will be provided. Requirements: English fluency Able to follow directions, Detailed oriented, Time Commitment: Monthly, January-March, May-July, September-November, or as needed Training material preparation is approximately 3-4 hours/per month pre-training. Creating attendance forms, payment tracking, learner/tutor match forms one-hour pre-training Important Notations: Great opportunity for individuals who want to contribute to a nonprofit in a meaningful way.
