Mission Statement
The Great Barrington Historical Society (GBHS) is a non-profit organization formed in 1977 for the purpose of collecting and preserving material pertinent to the history of Great Barrington. Its objectives are to provide an organization for people interested in learning about, recording, preserving and disseminating the history of our community, and to stimulate awareness of local history now and for future generations
Description
History is a story about the past that is significant and true. And Great Barrington’s stories are amazing! For nearly 40 years we’ve collected memories and worked hard to preserve the community’s heritage.
Our Work
GBHS maintains a stewardship role over thousands of artifacts that together tell the stories of the people, places and events that make up our Town’s rich history. Much of the collection is currently in storage, which the Society hopes to eventually relocate to the Truman Wheeler House where these items can be displayed and interpreted, and made available to help educate and engage students, community members and visitors.
