Mission Statement

Pacific Environment protects the living environment of the Pacific Rim by promoting grassroots activism, strengthening communities and reforming international policies.

Description

Our programs and campaigns around the Pacific Rim run the gamut--from defending California's renewable energy goals to sustaining the marine riches of the Bering Sea to ensuring China's environmental health.

Russia Program: Partnering with grassroots organizations to protect forest and steppe ecosystems, prevent destructive mining practices, promote responsible fisheries management, and advocate for environmental controls on offshore oil and gas development.

China Program: Strengthening China's home grown environmental movement by offering small grants, capacity-building support and joint campaigning on critical environmental problems.

Alaska Program: Bringing together Russian and American scientists, fisherpeople, environmentalists and indigenous people to chart a sustainable path for the Bering Sea.

California Energy Program: Spearheading Ratepayers for Affordable, Clean Energy--a statewide coalition that is defending California's commitment to clean energy future by fighting proposals to import liqueifed natural gas (LNG).

Responsible Finance: Holding the banks that finance resource extraction projects abroad accountable to taxpayers, project-impacted communities and the environment.

In the last two decades, Pacific Environment and our grassroots partners have:

  • Protected tens of millions of acres of wilderness;

  • Spearheaded efforts to protect endangered species like the Siberian Tiger, Amur leopard and Western Pacific Gray Whale;

  • Stopped the construction of environmentally-damaging oil pipelines, mines and dams; and

  • Forced international financial institutions to adopt higher environmental and social standards for their lending.
