"To Educate Communities about Bike Safety and Awareness to foster respect between cyclists and drivers."Our Goal is to "GEAR UP":
- Give support to programs that promote cycling safety;
- Educate the public, with emphasis on youth, about bicycling safety and awareness;
- Advocate for respect between cyclists and drivers;
- Reach out to families who have been impacted by a similar loss;
- Uplift the community by being good stewards of the environment and health through cycling;
- Perpetuate Brett’s legacy of supporting disabled cyclist programs.
We are currently partnering with Cycle Kids (cyclekids.org) to bring a standardized, tested and proven bike safety and health curriculum to Arizona.
On October 4, 2008, Brett Saks, a chiropractor, avid cyclist and guitar player in Chandler, Arizona, was training for a 600-mile ride on Highway 87 when a motorist under the influence of sleeping pills hit his bike from behind and killed him. He left behind his wife Kim and their two young children Aaron and Ana. To celebrate Brett’s life and giving spirit, Kim Saks founded the Brett Saks Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization in 2011. The Brett Saks Foundation fulfills Brett’s dream of supporting programs that help disabled cyclists, but also seeks to be sure that cycling accidents such as his become a thing of the past by educating our communities about bike safety and awareness to foster respect between cyclists and drivers.
As the mission of BSF has evolved, mainly due to Kim’s talent as an elementary school teacher and her belief that changes start in large part by educating the young, the organization is in the process of partnering with CycleKids, a program with a proven curriculum established in 2004 in Boston, MA. As an educator, Kim believes she has found a tested, vetted and exciting program to help BSF reach its goal. The CycleKids Mission (below) aligns with the Brett Saks Foundation’s Goal and Mission to teach about cycling and safety [from maintenance and safety, to how to wear a helmet properly],
"CYCLE Kids promotes healthy lifestyle choices by introducing kids to the joy of bicycling and educating them about bike safety and nutrition. We empower children to develop positive, safe, and active lifelong habits."
The Brett Saks Foundation’s goal is to bring CycleKids to Arizona. Your kind and generous support of all our activities (Bike Land at the Day of Play, Safety Festival, BSF Film Fest, Ride of Silence, and more) helps us to raise money for the development and roll out of this very special program, as well as support our mission to keep all riders safe and all communities aware of the rules and laws so that cooperation is fostered.
