Getting Michigan's hard working taxpayers back to work is my number one priority. As a father, an entrepreneur and constitutional conservative my goal is to help lead our state in a positive direction. I am a true outsider to politics, never holding public office. My desire is to represent the 73rd District as a citizen, as one of its own. As such, below are some of my core beliefs and principles that I plan to work for in Lansing should the voters elect me.
Limited Government: keeping the state out of local township and city politics. Just like urban sprawl keeps spreading, "government sprawl" keeps taking more and more of our local and individual rights away from us. The power belongs in the hands of the citizens at the local level and not in the hands of the state.
Pro Family. I believe that the family framework is the backbone of our society and must be supported in every way possible. The guidance, care and structure we give our children provide the moral foundation for our neighborhoods, our cities and our country. Families are our past, present and future.
Lower Taxes. I believe that lower taxes actually stimulate economic activity and not only encourage growth and investment, but also increase revenue (without raising additional taxes) to provide needed services like better roads. Supply side economics works. As more and more of our hard earned tax dollars are being siphoned off to support those who won’t work and support wasteful government spending, the incentive to work diminishes. There is something fundamentally wrong when we now have more people relying on some form of government assistance than we have people working and supporting the system. If you’re an able bodied American you should be working. We will provide a safety net, not a hammock.
Individual Liberty & Freedom. The Bill Of Rights was written for a reason. Although I am not a Libertarian, I strongly support individual liberty & freedom as spelled out in the Bill of Rights and our Michigan Constitution.
Entrepreneurialism & Free Enterprise. The Right to Work vote was a big step forward for Michigan. It has been shown that Right to Work states have had an average of 24% increase in revenue while Michigan lagged far behind. This "Freedom to Work" bill is a bill for freedom of employees to choose whether to support their union and will also increase the accountability to union leaders. The next step is to start working on the state’s biggest union, the MEA, to put the control back in the hands of parents and teachers of each district and not in the hands of big government in the form of "Common Core."
Pro-2nd Amendment. Those who attack an unarmed populace in malls, schools, movie theaters or out on the street are sick, period. They need help, but they are not an excuse to disarm the country. Statistically, the strongest gun control laws are in locations where crime is the highest. It doesn't say that gun control laws necessarily begat crime, but it does suggest those laws do not dissuade crime. There is a reason why the founders wanted the 2 nd amendment passed along with the other 9 Bill of Rights. We have a God given right and duty to protect our families, property and self-interest against anyone that tries to attack or steal from us.
Strong Defense and Support of Veterans. Peace through strength and honoring those who serve is essential for protecting what our forefathers created in our founding documents. As George Washington said,
"The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the Veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation."
And later Ronald Reagan said,
"There are some who've forgotten why we have a military. It's not to promote war, it's to be prepared for peace."
Honoring those who serve and are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice is a necessity for which I strongly support.
Pro Life. Defending the sanctity of life for the unborn and seniors. I have been on the board of Shared Pregnancy Crisis Center in Lansing and am adamantly pro-life. Protecting those who cannot protect themselves is one of my core beliefs.
Religious Liberty and Freedom. Our country was founded on the principle of religious liberty and freedom to worship in anyway your conscience led you. The current direction this country is heading with regard to religious liberty is concerning. Defending our individual right to worship as our conscience leads us must be protected by elected officials. Defending religious freedom and liberty is of one of my highest moral and ethical beliefs.
I welcome you to reach out to me if you choose and I will make every effort to respond or meet with you in person. Thank you for considering me as your next State Representative in the 73rd District!
Robert Regan "RJ"
