Mission Statement

To provide an opportunity for our neighbors and oursleves to grow as members of the body of Christ

Identify and implement outreach programs that are intentionally more hands-on as well as those supported primarily through collections of funds or goods. The Refugee Outreach Program is a primary outreach program that addresses the concerns of the local community and places us in direct physical working relationship with that community.

Description

Assist the elders of the local refugee community to improve their English language and cultural literacyskills, to facilitate their participation with the larger community, and to assist them in their desire to obtain citizenship.

The goal of the Holy Cross Episcopal and Ascension Lutheran Refugee Outreach Program is to work with the local refugee community to develop and sustain programs that support self-sufficiency for local residents especially the Nepali-speaking Bhutanese living within walking distance of Holy Cross. The Outreach Program has three primary objectives for its ESL and cultural literacy classes in 2014:

  • to demonstrate an increase of at least 20 percent in basic literacy skills over the course of the year as measured by the Laubach Way to Reading Diagnostic Inventory and Student Reading Profile;
  • to reach the maximum number of students our program can reasonably serve, an increase of at least 50 percent over spring 2013; and
  • to measure student’s basic citizenship knowledge with the intent of identifying areas requiring further instruction.
