Mission Statement

To create lasting relationships between mentor and student, in which the student feels empowered to take responsibility for their own life.

Description

Empower Mentoring Program was founded in 2013. Since then, we have been providing adult mentors to middle school students in West Seattle. Our mentors are older, wiser friends to their students, providing support, advice, and sometimes, just a listening ear. Our matches meet three times a month. Two of their meetings are one-on-one, doing activities of their choosing, deepening their bond and connection. Once a month all the matches come together to attend a workshop, where challenging topics are discussed and students learn different skills on how to deal with difficult situations.

While our mentors are acting as older, wiser friends, our students are gaining in their self confidence, their self-esteem is rising, their motivation levels are increasing, and they start to feel valued in their everyday life. Our mission is to create lasting relationships between mentors and students, in which the student feels empowered to take responsibility for their own life. Our goal is to support middle school students now, so that in the future they turn out to be competent, confident, responsible adults.

Empowerment Mentoring Program is a valuable and rewarding program for me as a lead, and for the work that we do with the youth at Denny Middle School. I was bullied in middle school, and subsequently left public school to attend running start. The youth that we meet are inspiring, learners and educators. This can help any young adult or elder.
