The mission of the Supercomputing Challenge is to teach teams of middle and high schools students how to use powerful computers to analyze, model and solve real world problems.
The Challenge is a year long program for teams of one to five middle or high school students and their teacher that goes from September through April. Teams submit a proposal, an interim report and a final report. Teams present their work at a project evaluation in February and an Expo in April. An awards ceremony is held the day after the Expo and participants receive plaques, trophies, savings bonds and scholarships.
Each summer there is a Summer Teacher Institute to help the teachers be better Challenge team sponsors.
