Mission Statement

The mission of the American Jewish Society for Service is to build Jewish leaders. Our summer program inspires teens to put their Jewish values into action as they provide significant service to communities in need.

The American Jewish Society for Service links social conscience to Jewish consciousness, engaging teenagers in acts of tikkun olam -- repairing the world -- one house, one park, one community center at a time.

Since 1951, AJSS has completed more than 135 projects in 46 states. Our programs serve rural and urban areas, including Native American reservations, migrant worker communities and neighborhoods devastated by natural disaster. Every raised hammer and paintbrush raises families from poverty and gives identity to a new generation.

Description

AJSS works with local development agencies around the country selecting three organizations to be our partners each summer. Under the supervision of the host agency, AJSS campers perform a wide variety of construction tasks.

Over a six week period in the summer our campers help construct affordable housing and facilities for communities in need. Campers experience hands on manual labor, physically building "community" as they perform the mitzvah of tikkun olam. High school community service credit can be earned from participation in an AJSS summer project.

Our program develops leadership skills in our campers so they can more effectively assume leadership roles in college and in their full adulthood.

We live, work and play together as a group and spend our weekends exploring an exciting corner of the country. We foster a welcoming, pluralistic community of teens.
