Mission Statement

The Need for Speed Relay against Domestic Violence raises awareness and funds for the Avon Foundation to help end the cycle of domestic violence for today's children. Funds raised will support a national grant program that addresses the challenges faced by children of domestic violence--with an emphasis on counselling, education and skill development to prevent them from becoming the victims or abusers in the future.

Funds raised will support an Avon Foundation grant to the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation for a Margaret's Place . Established in honor of Joe's mother Margaret, a victim of abuse, this program provides middle and high school students with a safe place in their school. This room provides a trained counselor to help students overcome the pervasive cycle of domestic and teen dating violence. The foundation's guiding principle is that every child has a right to be safe at home.

Description

Teams of 6 to 9 members run an approximate 50 mile, point-to-point relay, with 9 legs varying in length and terrain. The Relay starts at beautiful Bear Mountain State Park and winds through the scenic Hudson Valley and Westchester County, finishing with a fabulous post-race party and festival in downtown New Rochelle , NY . All runners are asked to raise or donate at least $50 to help end the cycle of domestic violence.
