Mission Statement

Kate Weare Company is a New York-based contemporary dance group creating and performing the work of Kate Weare characterized by fierce physicality, thoughtfulness and authenticity.

The dances explore a contemporary view of intimacy - both stark and tender - by drawing on our most basic urge to move and decode movement. Relationship forms a framework for these dances, which in turn suggest the body’s intelligence is pivotal in our search for intimacy.Weare uses the moving body to explore its innate truth-telling: our need for safety, our longing to connect, our desire to be seen, our irrepressible intelligence about who we are as individuals.

Description

Kate Weare Company is an NY-based contemporary dance company known for its startling combination of formal choreographic values and visceral, emotional interpretation. Weare’s dances explore contemporary views of intimacy, both tender and stark, by drawing on our most basic urges to move and decode movement. The company’s working method stems from a close communion in the studio that mines the body’s innate capacity for truth-telling: our need for safety, our longing to connect, our desire to be seen, our irrepressible intelligence about who we are as individuals.

In 2005, Kate Weare Company was founded in New York City. As Artistic Director, Kate Weare cultivates the potent individuality of each of her dancers to unleash a chemistry onstage that is both heartfelt and seductive. The company made its name after winning NYC’s The AWARD Show in 2007, and has since been presented in New York by The Joyce Theater, Fall for Dance at New York City Center, Symphony Space, Joyce SoHo, Skirball Center, DancemOpolitan at Joe’s Pub, Dance Theater Workshop, Dance New Amsterdam and Danspace Project. Nationwide the company has been presented by Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, American Dance Festival, Bates Dance Festival, Florida Dance Association, The Ringling Museum of Art, ArtPower at UC San Diego, Dance Celebration Philadelphia, Keene State College, Alfred University, Spring to Dance St. Louis and ODC Theater. Company teaching residencies have included NYU/Tisch School of the Arts, Long Island University, Marymount Manhattan College, Brockport College, Bates Dance Festival and Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Kate Weare Company has also been supported through artistic residencies awarded by the Joyce Theater Foundation and Joyce SoHo Residency, Dance New Amsterdam’s A.I.R. Program and ODC Theater. The company has commissioned original music from One Ring Zero, Argento Chamber Ensemble and The Crooked Jades, and performed live with both Argento (Danspace) and The Crooked Jades (The Joyce Theater). Major support has been received through private foundations such as The Greenwall Foundation, Bossak/Heilbron Charitable Foundation, Manhattan Arts Community Fund, The Hellman Foundation, American Music Center Live Music for Dance, The O’Donnell-Green Music and Dance Foundation, NYSCA, New York Foundation for the Arts BUILD and NEFA’s National Dance Project.
