Mission Statement

Knox County is a diversion program for first time juvenile misdemeanor offenders, is based on the philosophy that a youthful law violator does not continue to be an offender when a jury of their peers determines punsihment. The program focuses on youth accountability and development of positive outcomes. Teen Court is designed to interrupt patterns of criminal behavior by promoting positive feelings of self-esteem, motivating self-improvement, and developing a healthy attitude towards authority figures.

Description

Knox County Teen Court takes first time misdemeanor offenders through a trial of their peers. Are court is compiled of teens except for a judge who is a attorney in the area. Defendants are given sentences from their peers (teens). Some of the sentences that defendants are given are substance abuse evaluation and treatment if a defendant shows the need. Tutoring if they are failing classes. Anger Management classes, Decision Making & Peer Pressure avoidance classes. Theft seminar for teens arrested for stealing. Letters of apologies to the victim or essays about their crime. Our goal is that defendants are never arrested again.
